Creative U! - The Heart of the Fire

Creative U! is an annual arts event presented by Initiatives of Change (IofC) Australia.

Rooted in the belief that creativity is essential to personal growth and societal transformation, Creative U! is an evening that provides local artists with a platform for expression across visual art, drama, poetry, music and storytelling.

Hosted at Armagh, a century-old house in Toorak, Melbourne, Creative U! makes use of the property’s unique spaces to engage the wider community. The event brings together people from diverse cultural backgrounds, creating opportunities for connection while showcasing local talent.

The development of Creative U! involved a mix of creative and practical responsibilities. I helped name and shape the event and worked across planning, administration and preparation. This included reaching out to different cultural communities, liaising with artists and performers, and helping bring the many elements of the evening together.

I designed the flyers, posters, graphic assets and promotional materials used to market the event. On the evening, I hosted the entire program, introducing each act and guiding the audience through the performances. I also worked with the art group to design the immersive Heart of the Fire installation, filming its creation and final presentation.

The Heart of the Fire: An Immersive Installation

Developed by participating artists for Creative U!, The Heart of the Fire was a large-scale immersive installation exploring storytelling, connection and shared experience. Suspended strands of red wool filled the room, transforming the interior through colour, texture and movement.

The work drew on the symbolism of fire as a place where people have gathered for generations to exchange stories, knowledge and ideas. The flowing red wool created a spatial interpretation of flame, inviting guests to move through the installation and gather within it.

Created collaboratively over several weeks, each strand was woven by hand by the participating artists. The finished installation brought these individual contributions together as a single visual expression of connection and collective creativity.
